Myths and Legends of the Ancient Greeks

Ken as OdysseusAre you looking for a new way of introducing the topic?
Do you want your children to think about, and understand what it really meant to live in Ancient Greek times? Do you want them to see that Greek myths and legends are more than just stories? Then why not invite a real Ancient Greek into the school for them to meet and talk to?

Ken Walker can come into your school, in the role of one of the great heroes of Ancient Greece, and tell the story of his adventures, as they happened to him (i.e. in first person narrative).

He might come as:

  • Achilles, the greatest of the Greek warriors who fought at the Trojan War.
  • Odysseus, who got lost in a world of witches, monsters and Cyclopes on his way back home from Troy.
  • Heracles, who had to perform his Twelve Labours.
  • Jason, who sailed to the ends of the Earth, with the help of his sailors, the Argonauts, to recover the Golden Fleece.
  • Perseus, who had to fetch the Head of the Gorgon, Medusa.
  • Theseus, who went to Crete to kill the Minotaur.

Or he might come as a god, such as:

  • Prometheus, who brought the gift of Fire to Mankind, and tells the story of Pandora’s Jar.
  • Zeus, the King of the Gods, who can tell the children about all the twelve Gods of Mount Olympus.

Workshop

After the storytelling session, the children will have the opportunity to make table-top puppets, and re-enact the stories they have heard before an audience at the end of the day.
