Special Needs and INSET Days
Special Needs
All of our projects outlined on this website have been adapted and used for special needs children in special schools. In addition we have often created ‘one-off’ tailor-made projects for special schools on request, on various topics, sometimes involving children from neighbouring schools or sixth form colleges.
Topics covered:
- Caribbean Carnival
- Africa
- North American Indians
- Sea Stories
- Environmental Themes
- Treasure Hunts
Mary and Ken work with special needs children in Romania for the ‘Muzika Charitable Trust.’ They have run UNICEF funded INSET training courses on creative approaches for teachers, psychologists and carers, who work with special needs children in Romania.
Mary recently ran an INSET day for ‘Muzika’ in Nottingham, on ‘Using puppetry and storytelling with autistic children in both mainstream and special schools’. Teachers came from all over the UK.
INSET Days
Mary and Ken have run many training days for various education authorities, on literacy and oracy, using puppetry.
These INSET days are hugely practical and ‘hands-on’, leaving teachers with lots of ideas for
- Creative writing
- Speaking and listening
- Language development through storytelling
- Stories that can be written and stories that can be told
- Early years
- Special needs
- Cross-curricular teaching, using puppetry and stories to bring to life subjects as diverse as science, geography and citizenship.
